After leaving the company that bore his name in 1979, Alan F. Shugart founded Seagate. A year later, the company released the world’s first 5.25-inch hard drive, ST506. This hard drive had a capacity of 5 MB, a speed of 3600 rpm and an average data transfer rate of 85 ms. In 1983, the Rodime company manufactured RO352, the first 3.5-inch hard disk, which is now the standard form factor. It had a capacity of 10 MB.
